USCIS Introduces New Version of Form I-9 for Easier Employment Verification

John Montesanti • September 21, 2023

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has unveiled a new version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. This form is essential for employers to verify the identity and employment authorization of their employees. The updated edition has been streamlined, now consisting of just one page, making it more user-friendly for both employers and employees.

The improvements in the new version include clearer instructions and guidance on acceptable receipts, along with information about the auto-extension of certain documents listed on the Lists of Acceptable Documents.

Employers can start using the new edition from August 1, 2023, but they have the option to continue using the 2019 version until October 31, 2023. After November 1, 2023, only the new Form I-9 with the date "08/01/2023" at the lower left corner should be used.

In addition to this update, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has published a notice in the Federal Register, modernizing employment eligibility verification. Starting from August 1, 2023, E-Verify employers can remotely examine Form I-9 documents, provided they follow specific steps outlined by the USCIS.
